About This Location

Rani ki Vav (Queen's Stepwell) in Patan is UNESCO's finest example of a stepwell — built in the 11th century by Queen Udayamati in memory of her husband King Bhimdev I. It has over 500 principal sculptures and 1,000 minor sculptures arranged in seven levels of stairs descending to the water. The extraordinary carved panels depict Vishnu's ten avatars, apsaras, and serpent kings in remarkable detail. It now appears on India's ₹100 note.
