About This Location

The Adalaj Vav is an extraordinary example of Indo-Islamic architecture โ€” a five-storey stepwell built in 1499 by Queen Rudabai. Descending into the stepwell, which was built for travellers to rest in its shade and cool water, the visitor passes through increasingly intricate carved stone galleries. The play of light from the three narrow shafts illuminating the carved pillars, niches, and friezes at different times of day creates dramatic chiaroscuro photography.
