Kaza, Himachal Pradesh
Spiti Valley, a cold desert mountain valley in Himachal Pradesh at an average altitude of 4,000m, is one of India's most remote and spectacular landscapes. The stark lunar landscape, ancient Buddhist monasteries perched on cliffsides (Key Monastery, Dhankar), coloured mineral mountains, turquoise rivers, and the extraordinary light quality at high altitude create photographs unlike anywhere else on Earth. The 2,000-year-old Tabo Monastery and Pin Valley National Park round out the experience.
Road from Shimla (7 hours) or Manali (8 hours) via Rohtang Pass. Road closes in winter.
