Living Root Bridges, Nongriat

Cherrapunji, Meghalaya

About This Location

The living root bridges of Meghalaya's Khasi Hills are among India's most extraordinary natural engineering achievements. The Jingkieng Nongriat double-decker bridge (accessible by a 3,500-step trek from Tyrna village) is the most famous — two bridges stacked vertically, woven over 15+ years from aerial roots of rubber fig trees, spanning a crystal stream in dense rainforest. The mossy, organic structures draped in ferns are extraordinarily photogenic.
